Goal: OpenModem is an open source, low cost and low power underwater acoustic modem for communication. Existing underwater acoustic modems cost thousands of dollars, making them out of reach for the general public and most of academia, which severely limits ocean exploration. The goal of OpenModem is to empower researchers, explorers, DIYers and tinkerers to discover and explore the ocean, by providing an inexpensive platform for communication and data transmission. OpenModem is composed of a piezoelectric transceiver (acts as a transmitter and receiver at the same time) with custom power and receiver circuits, housed in a small footprint cylindrical container. The first version of the open source documentation is scheduled to release in April 2019. Be on the lookout for it and we welcome all collaborations!
